Hey guys, were looking for a few more bands for a show this coming Saturday. I don't care what genre you are, as long as your respectful to awesome DIY venues. So far the show looks like this:

Cottage St Studios, formerly Darkwoods. I LOVE this place, it has a real flywheel environment.

Thats what I like. Compare the flywheel, real DIY shit of MAJORITY honest people, with a couple of shmucks who are making tons of retarded profit and being sketchy and cancelling peoples shows without telling them a midst a scandalous event within their own walls.

i have my own qualms with that space, but for different reasons.

From my understanding, it's due to multiple people. As the story has continued, I kept getting new information.

As things seemed to occur back when they "almost shut down", it was apparently discovered that the boy that was helping there was stealing shit from the older two. The woman was creepy and shitty. And the dude was the one who's idea it was to take 70/30.

I mean, that seems to tell me that all 3 that were involved, are to blame.

Plus, who's to blame when they fucked Therrien's show over? None of them returned any of his emails or any attempts to contact them. The shitty woman seems to have taken over as PR, so she's STILL to blame. The boy got booted from the operations for stealing as I understand, and the dude still won't step forward and claim it as his own.

They all seem like they're fucking retarded and deserve all the blame.

as far as the shady business is concerned i don't know the story so i will stay out of it, but i will say that as far as the space itself is concerned it pales in comparison to the flywheel. playing there with sick and tired and outcold was pretty awesome in my opinion, three bands, that i wanted to see, perfect. but being there for hours for that benefit (for...something?)with like 4 real bands and 14 pearl street nu-metal bands was horrible. and the stairs suck and the lady is creepy and the sound is kinda flat or something. but i don't hate the place, i guess.

Dark Woods/357 Cottage/Whatever seems/seemed pretty sketchy, but I managed to play two pretty good shows there, so it can't be all bad. Hell it's no Gabby's, that's for sure.

Every venue has sketch elements and people doing stupid things in and around the place. Its the nature of the beast. I could comment on every venue I've ever been to in Wmass having weird things and people going on.

People get worked up over the 70/30 split, but have no qualms that they didn't charge you for the space, even though a hall could've been sought out but they'd *GASP!* have to put their own money down. I'm not saying I thought it was especially cool or whatever, but that's how they operated.

Beyond that, the initial goal of the 70/30 split was to pump money back into the space. They did a lot of work there initially and shit ain't free.

The reason the guy who ran the space shut down the shows was because the guy who booked it was taking the lion's share of the door. This left them with little left over to work with and cover any overhead or new PA equipment. I guess I missed the part where Darkwoods was the only venue to ever suffer from a promoter taking too much money for themselves. That's gotta be a first...

And judging a venue just because someone who worked there stole from there? Well, it looks like Michael will be boycotting the Flywheel then too. Sorry they made the mistake of trusting someone who turned out to have problems.

I have my own issues with the space based on more than a game of punk rock telephone.

we only played that space once before the guy who caused all the problems got kicked out. That show was amazing, and seeing how small the turn out was that night, it was no problem that there was no payment. Maybe you guys think that woman is creepy, but I think she happens to be a very nice person and now that she and her man are running the place things are amazing. I didn't say it was the flywheel, I said the place has that kind of vibe. While it got off to a rough start, it's great now, and the shows there are very low-key, laid back and just fun. They've had many problems with people at hardcore shows trashing the place, and people stealing from them because they were under-staffed for shows that would bring over 75 people. Now that the thief is no longer involved they don't book nu-metal, their booking mostly punk and indie now. The metal bands I've seen there recently were very good, and not that standard tough guy shit. They usually don't get that many people coming to their shows because they aren't well known yet, and the money they get goes into rent, buying equipment and ultimately a recording studio, I have no problem with that what so ever. They always pay touring bands. I've become pretty good friends with the people who currently run it, and I assure you they are great people. Cottage st is underground, very, very underground and I like it that way.

in retro-spect it would've made MUCH more sense to just boycott the place, but youth has its own logic

i was always under the impression that the fuckgabbys show was solely to cause enough of a ruckus to get the police to show up, because the owner (whatever his name was, i still have his phone number somewhere) would allllllways talk about how if the police showed up, hed be screwed. so thats why we couldnt hang out in front of the place, and all his weird rules. i dont really remember all of what happened, but at the very least, that dude had some cleaning to do and maybe a few less chairs. who knows. as duffytron said, youthful logic. after the incident where he did NOTHING to protect exit when a GANG showed up to fuck jay and us up, i really could care less what happened to the place. he knew why they were there and he let them in anyways, then basically acted like nothing was happening when jay was pinned in a corner by 30 guys, most of which were known to be carrying knives and shit. wicked lame..

however, if the place were still open, id totally play there one more time. i miss the stripper mirrors.

the place just got wrecked. mirrors egged, chairs smashed, the light show got tore up and broken. utility closet got m80'd, bathroom got smashed and m80'd... it was bad.

funny at the time, stupid now. but hey, everyone wants a venue for free.

it was open again briefly as finn maccools, but then closed again. they'd have shows that i believe were free...
